Dab Rigs

A dab rig is a water pipe built for concentrate instead of flower. The chamber is smaller and the percolation lighter than a bong's, because concentrate vapor is fragile — drag it through too much water and you strip the flavor you paid for. Rigs here run from $40 mini tubes to recyclers and electric units.

Not sure what you need to actually take a dab? A complete first setup is a rig, a quartz banger sized to your joint, a carb cap, a dab tool, and either a torch or an e-nail.

How to choose dab rigs

Size matters in reverse

Bigger is worse for dabs. A 6–10 inch rig keeps the vapor path short and dense; a 16-inch tube lets the vapor cool and condense on the glass before it reaches you. If you already own a tall bong, a dropdown and banger will work, but a dedicated small rig hits noticeably better.

Percolator styles

Recyclers loop water and vapor through two chambers — smooth, and they keep the water off your lips. Fixed-stem rigs are simplest and easiest to clean. Showerhead and honeycomb percs add diffusion; anything with more than two percs is usually too much drag for concentrate.

Joint size and banger fit

Most rigs use a 14mm male joint; some minis use 10mm. Measure before buying a banger — a 14mm banger in a 10mm joint doesn't seal, and adapters add a leak point. Angle matters too: 90° joints take flat-top bangers, 45° joints take angled ones.

Keeping it clean

Reclaim hardens fast. Swab the banger with a cotton tip while it's still warm after each dab, and run isopropyl and salt through the rig weekly. A dirty banger tastes like burnt oil no matter how good the concentrate is.

Dab Rigs FAQ

What's the difference between a bong and a dab rig?
A bong is designed for flower smoke and usually has a large chamber and heavy percolation. A dab rig is smaller with lighter filtration because concentrate vapor loses flavor with too much water contact, and it uses a quartz banger instead of a bowl.
Can I use a bong as a dab rig?
Yes, if the joint size matches — swap the flower bowl for a quartz banger. The hit will be more diluted than a purpose-built rig, but it works.
What size dab rig should I buy?
6 to 10 inches for most people. Small enough to keep vapor dense, big enough to hold water without splashing.
Do I need a torch?
For a glass rig, yes — a butane torch to heat the banger. Skip the torch by buying an electric dab rig or an e-nail instead.
